Demographics

Salug [8o2'N 122o50'E] is a 5th class municipality (3rd class, according to Wikipedia) in, and belongs to the 3rd district of, the province of Zamboanga del Norte in Region IX (Western Mindanao). It is 101 kilometers from Dipolog City.

Land Area
Salug has 36,453 hectares in land area, roughly 363.65 square kilometers.

Land Forms
The mountains range from slightly rolling to mountainous, with valleys forming the inland area comprising 747,286 square meters. The soil is alluvial.

Land Use
Around 74.46 percent of land (27,143 has) comprises the woodland, the highest segment in this category. Land used in agriculture runs at 4,986.8, or 13.68 percent. Open grassland is 3,324.5 has, or 9.12 percent. The rest (1,003 has) include an hectare of wetland.

Climate
Its temperature is highest in November and December at 30 deg Celsius (87 deg F), and lowest at 23 deg Celsius (74 deg F). or an annual average of 28 deg C.

Census 2000: 28,914 people; 5,838 households
For five years, its population increased at 8,186 people (39.4%), or an average of 7.89% increase annually. It has a population density of 80 persons per sq. km.

It has a density of 57 persons per square kilometer.

Religion
Roman Catholics comprise 69% of the population. Protestans have around 10%, while Islam, 2%. Non-Catholic Christian denominations comprise around 18 percent. While the rest remained unprofessed.

Indigenous Communities
Salug is home to small communities of Subanen, and a mixture of Samals and Tausugs.

Dialects
Around 59 percent of Salugnons speak Cebuano. Those who speak Subanen continue hold 10.7% of the population. Minor dialects include Ilonggo (7.88%), Samal (2.95%), Tagalog-Waray-Maguindanao-Tausug (1.97% each), and Maranao (1.12%).

Districts
Salug is divided into two districts--Salug I and Salug II.
Salug I District
The First District comprises the two poblacion barangays (Poblacion East, Poblacion West), Balacan, Danao, Dinuan, Calucap, Lanawan, Liguac, Mucas, Pacuhan, and Tambalang.
Salug II District
The Second District includes Bacong, Binoni, Canawan, Caracol, Dipolod, Fatima, Ipilan, Lipakan, Pukay, Ramon Magsaysay, Sto. Niño, and Tapalan.

Livelihood
The major sources of livehood are farming, fishing, trading, and poultry growing.

Facilities
Salug has no hospital; although it has seven barangay health centers in addition to a municipal health center.

Malnourish Children
Moderately malnourished children comprised 12 percent. Severely malnourished children has only 0.14 percent.

Overweights
At least 15 percent of Salugnons are overweight.

National High Schools
Salug has two national high schools, one in each district. Salug National High School (its school magazine called The Echo) in Salug I District, with an Extension Campus in Ramon Magsaysay. And Bacong National High School in Salug II District (its school magazine called The Sower).
Central Elementary Schools
Salug has two central elementary schools in each district--Salug Central School in Salug I District, and Bacong Central School in Salug II District. Salug has one high school located at Caracol, three elementary schools, and 18 daycare centers.
Barangay Elementary Schools
The municipality of Salug has a total of 21 elementary schools located in certain barangays.
Salug I District has nine elementary schools located the following barangays--Balacan, Danao, Dinuan, Calucap, Lanawan, Liguac, Mucas, Pacuhan, and Tambalang.
Salug II District has 12, and found in Bacong, Binoni, Canawan, Caracol, Dipolod, Fatima, Ipila, Lipakan, Pukay, Ramon Magsaysay, Sto. Niño, and Tapalan.

Literacy
It has a literacy rate of 92 percent.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Road Network
Its national roads has 14 km asphalted; 10 km provincial roads, also asphalted. Only 1.45 km of municiapl roads are concreted; 2.47 km on gravel, and 2.17 on earth.
